The forward-loading doors of the Me 323 were the key to its utility, as this one demonstrates at Tunis in November 1942. Almost anything that could fit through the opening in the nose could be quickly loaded and unloaded, an important capability in the middle of a combat zone where time was of the essence.

Men load an Me 323 with little effort on 25 May 1941. The double clam-shell doors were such a practical innovation that they continue to be a standard design feature of modern jet transports. The ‘Gigant’ also had quick-fitting hold-down points inside the fuselage, which enabled crews to soundly secure even large items of cargo. (George Petersen)
